As Wales gears up for the Euro 2024 play-off final, one player is relying on an unconventional lucky charm to bring success to his team – Connor Roberts and his moustache.
The Leeds United right-back, currently on loan from Burnley, will be a key figure in Wales’ clash against Poland in the play-off semi-final in Cardiff on Tuesday. And amidst his preparations, Roberts is holding onto a superstition that has brought him good fortune both on the pitch and off – his moustache.
“It’s just a little bit of a joke to be honest,” Roberts explained. “My wife suggested I grow it last year, and since then, we’ve seen some remarkable results – an unbeaten run at Burnley and now with Wales.”
Roberts humorously credits his facial hair with about 25 Championship games without a loss and hopes the luck extends to the upcoming crucial fixture against Poland. “It’s the power of the ‘tache, isn’t it?”
While some have likened Roberts’ moustache to iconic figures like Tom Selleck’s Magnum, P.I., others see a resemblance to characters from Blackadder Goes Forth. Regardless of its comparison, Roberts remains focused on the task at hand – securing Wales’ qualification for the Euro 2024 finals.
“For Wales, I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of big games. It’s another one on Tuesday night,” he said. “Life, football is about moments, and Tuesday is another moment, a chance to achieve something, to make memories.”
As Wales aims for a third consecutive European Championship appearance, Roberts is determined to represent his country on the grand stage once again. “We all want it so bad. We’ve experienced nights, tournaments where it’s just brilliant. Tuesday we have to win, we have to give everything.”
